Why You Need to Make Flossing a Priority

While there’s so much focus on toothbrushing in terms of personal oral hygiene, there’s also something else that we shouldn’t forget: daily flossing. Flossing with traditional string floss, a water flosser, floss picks, or a combination is something you should be doing at least once a day and here’s why.

Clean Out the Gaps Between Teeth

Brushing your teeth with the right technique and tools does a great job of cleaning away food debris and keeping plaque at bay, but those bristles can’t get into the small gaps between your teeth and under your gums. Daily flossing allows you to properly clean all surfaces of your teeth, not just the front and back. Otherwise, you have a greater likelihood of experiencing tooth discoloration, tooth decay, sensitivity, bad breath, and gum disease.

Protect Your Gum Health

Bad bacteria love to hang out right around the gumline where it’s easy to get missed by toothbrushing. Left unchecked, this bacteria will irritate and infect your gums. Inflamed gums are abnormally red, tender, puffy, and prone to bleeding. Your gums can pull back from your teeth and contribute to sensitivity, decay, and even tooth loss. When you floss your teeth regularly, you are protecting your smile from periodontal disease, or gum disease.

Keep Away Bad Breath

Food particles and bacteria that get stuck on your teeth for just a short time can lead to bad breath. Flossing removes these particles so they can’t create a foul odor.
