Recovery Tips After Oral Surgery

March 30, 2022 8:00 pm

Whether it’s a tooth extraction or dental implant, an oral surgery procedure may result in some pain, bleeding, or swelling afterward. There are several steps you can take to improve your chances of a smooth recovery.

  1. Rest
  2. You may be eager to enjoy your normal activities and routine again, but it is best to rest for at least 48-72 hours after oral surgery. This general time frame can help you avoid dislodging the blood clot and causing extra bleeding. Refrain from bending, lifting, and participating in vigorous physical activity. When you lay down, keep your head elevated with pillows.

  3. Eat Soft Foods
  4. Allowing your mouth to heal is more than just about resting. What you eat can also impact your post-op recovery. Avoid hard, rough, and crunchy foods that can irritate the surgery site. Drink plenty of water and stick with nutritious foods that are easy to eat, such as scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, baked sweet potatoes, smoothies, yogurt, pureed soups, applesauce, pasta, and bananas.

  5. Keep Your Mouth Clean
  6. It’s essential to maintain your oral hygiene even after oral surgery, with a few precautions shortly after your treatment. For example, avoid vigorous spitting and rinsing for 2 days, then start gently rinsing with warm water and salt. Carefully clean around the affected area with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Continue brushing and flossing your other teeth as normal.
